Here, a Nicodemus

Leave, return, stand, and sit
Lift and carry, place and pause
Hug and hassle, kiss and play
Love and protest, fear and pray

Press the thought beneath the tongue
Trap the words behind the teeth
Smile to push it all away
Lie when nothing left to say

Hide in shadowed silence bought
Crouch amid the treasured dust
Cover head from volleyed hate
Refuse to see another way

Here, a Nicodemus mind
Weighs the gold against the red
Aching for the smallest trace
Of Peter’s reckless, faithful clay

Eternity and Happiness
Regarded death in gleaming blade
Lifted hymns through bodies waived
To light the dark with better Day

Let hymns of joy lift higher still
Let scarlet Treasure tip the scale
Let treasured dust blow far away
Let tongue and teeth find Word to say
